A Computational Perspective to Language andIntelligence

Abstract

Natural language processing is part ofartificial intelligence. In the era of large language models, let's review thedevelopment of natural language processing from machine translation to largelanguage models in the history, draw on our understanding of humanintelligence, and discuss the potential and limitations of large languagemodels today.

Bio

Haizhou Li is a Presidential ChairProfessor and Executive Dean at the School of Data Science, The ChineseUniversity of Hong Kong, Shenzhen, China. Prof. Li has taught in NanyangTechnological University in Singapore(2006-2016), National University of Singapore(2016-2021).

Professor Li’' s research interests includeautomatic speech recognition and natural language processing. He served as theEditor-in-Chief of IEEE/ACM TRANSACTIONS ON AUDIO, SPEECH AND LAN-GUAGEPROCESSING (2015-2018), the President of the international Speech CommunicationAssociation (2015-2017), the President of Asia Pacific Signal and informationProcessing Association (2015-2016), the President of the Asian Federation ofNatural Language Processing (2017-2018), the Vice President of lEEE Signal ProcessingSociety (2024-2026). He was the General Chair of ACL 2012, INTERSPEECH 2014,and IEEE ICASSP 2022.

Professor Li was the recipient of Nationallnfocomm Awards 2002, institution of Engineers Singapore (lES) PrestigiousEngineering Achievement Award 2013 and 2015, President’s Technology Award 2013,and MTl Innovation Activist Gold Award 2015 in Singapore. He was named one ofthe two Nokia Visiting Professors in 2009 by Nokia Foundation, lEEE Fellow in2014 for leadership in multilingual, speaker and language recognition, ISCAFellow in 2018 for contributions to multilingual speech information processing,Bremen Excellence Chair Professor in 2019, and Fellow of the Academy ofEngineering Singapore in 2022.

个人简介
李海洲是香港中文大学（深圳）数据科学学院的校长讲席教授兼执行院长。李教授曾在新加坡南洋理工大学（2006-2016年）和新加坡国立大学（2016-2021年）任教。

李教授的研究兴趣包括自动语音识别和自然语言处理。他曾任IEEE/ACM音频、语音与语言处理汇刊主编（2015-2018年），国际语音通信协会主席（2015-2017年），亚太信号与信息处理协会主席（2015-2016年），亚洲自然语言处理联合会主席（2017-2018年），IEEE信号处理学会副会长（2024-2026年）。他还曾担任ACL 2012、INTERSPEECH 2014和IEEE ICASSP 2022的大会主席。

李教授荣获了2002年国家信息通信奖、新加坡工程师学会（IES）2013年和2015年杰出工程成就奖、2013年总统技术奖以及2015年新加坡MTI创新积极分子金奖。他于2009年被诺基亚基金会评为两位诺基亚客座教授之一，因在多语言、说话者和语言识别方面的领导地位于2014年当选为IEEE会士，因对多语言语音信息处理的贡献于2018年当选为国际语音通信协会会士，于2019年担任不来梅卓越讲座教授，并于2022年当选为新加坡工程院院士。
